Raise your hand if you do not dread that dark area under the kitchen sink, and you have my admiration. When I had just begun to work years ago, I once rented a 25-year old home. What was I thinking? Affordable rent. Every night was a nightmare. The minute I would switch on the light, all I could see on the floor were generations of roaches that came from under the sink. Maybe because: 1) the kitchen was dark 2) the pipes leading to the gutter underneath were ill-fitted 3) it was hard to access for cleaning, and 4) the…

I’m not a trained interior designer.   Wondering why this disclosure? Because I learnt the nuances while designing our house, as I’m sure many of us have. How? Didn’t we have a designer? It makes for an interesting story that I will tell in another post. Every room took days, but the ones that took up maximum time were kitchen, pooja and the foyer bench.    In this post, I’m going to answer all the queries about designing an Indian kitchen using the ones designed by Livspace to illustrate each point. My son and I cracked the kitchen design…

My mum was here for a fortnight, and like me, she is fond of all things organizing. For the kitchen, in particular. She helped me in organizing organized the kitchen, got rid of stuff that were old, plastics, and put a ban on purchasing anything new until it was time to discard some of the existing canisters. Aren’t mums are the best? I really love it when she is here as it’s like getting a crash course on life and how to be wiser and balanced. I took her to Home Centre and she shortlisted a few things I must buy…

Small kitchens are challenging to design; and given the whirl of activity around the clock in the kitchen, it takes finesse to balance functionality and style in the limited space. Masterchef has, if nothing else, tickled our imagination, encouraged us to try new cuisines and find comfort beyond dal-chawal. It has turned the modest kitchens into labs, while kids have raised the bar for moms to cook up delicacies that are not only satiating to the taste buds but also a visual delight. As a side effect, the storage demands have also grown manifold to accommodate ingredients and appliances. The kitchens…

It’s been three months since we moved into this new house. It feels like home now. We cherish the crisp air in the mornings, the evening breeze, and I must sheepishly admit, I sometimes miss the sounds and cacophony of Marathahalli. In today’s post, I offer you first glimpses into my kitchen: a place that I hold dear to my heart because of the time and effort that went into  its planning, civil modifications, designing, choosing a vendor and execution. Kitchen layout: It is a 14 feet long by 11.5 feet wide east facing kitchen. The kitchen is flanked on…

Surprised that Friday shopping is back? Oh well! I figured I might as well curate my shopping cart into a post since I spend so much time ogling through random stuff all day. I am in the process of discarding stuff right now and buying canisters/jars for the new kitchen. On top of my shopping list was a rectangular spice container to hold essentials: turmeric powder, paprika/chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, chat masala, and kasuri methi powder. These are what I use on a daily basis. I was particular about the shape since it saves space in the tandem…
