The porch at Vibhuti’s home. Decor Tip: The hanging bottle is a DIY, made out of mayonnaise bottles, rope and a tree stem. Paint the windows for a colorful touch. One common question I receive every year between March and May is for ideas on how to spruce up the government bungalows. This is the time of the year when many families move to a different location. So, who better than Vibhuti Pandey, who lives in one such sprawling bungalow in Patna, take us through budget-friendly ideas to decorate your rental home. For the better part of my childhood, we lived in homes – called official accommodations / government quarters – that were part of a colony in a factory. Even the newly constructed ones became…
Home to a family of three generations, an elegant silver gray rules the colour palette of this Ahmedabad bungalow designed by Urban Sense Architects. There are other striking aspects, too, such as brass inlays, larger-than-life art, and the master bed room designed on a deck of cards. Yes, it has art so big that your eyes will be fixated on it for a while trying to absorb what it is before letting your gaze wander again. Don’t believe me? Then, you’ve got to scroll down to see yourself. About the project: Who lives here: Mr. Dhaval Patel & his family, his elder brother and his family, and his parents. When Meghna Venkatesh shared 2-3 pictures of her living room, I wanted to see the rest of her 2,200 sq.ft home in the Bay Area. Every inch of the living space is decked tastefully with wooden artifacts and chests, brass lamps, Tanjore paintings, and handwoven dhurries that reminded me of some treasured finds at Cauvery Emporium or Cottage Industries from the late ’90s. Meghna went on to confide that the living and staircase are decorated in the Indian ethnic theme while the rest of the home is predominantly modern functional. And, for a change, this home tour is narrated in first person by Meghna. About the home: Who lives here: Meghna Venkatesh, Swaminathan, Pranav Swaminathan, our 6 year old miniature schnauzer Ludo. This holiday bungalow in Lonavala gets its free-spirited design from Hakuna Matata / Lion King. Fancy that! Designed by architect firm Design Inc., this home is part of a high-end bungalow scheme with a neat modern structure that was already in place. The architects have accentuated the fluid design with quirky pieces of furniture, subdued lighting, and life-size sculptures that seem to have their own conversation going on. It’s a fun place to tour and am sure much more fun for the family to hang out and let their hair down. Don’t miss the poem at the end which the architects created to guide them through the design. About the home: Location: Lonavala Size: 5,500 – 6000 sft Time taken to complete: 6 months Architects:…

It’s not often you see a peacock sauntering into your home, totally at ease with the surroundings. A creature of habit, perhaps, for this home has stood on this ground in Ahmedabad for many years. Architecture firm UA Lab were engaged to renovate the home to make more room internally for the family and give the entire interiors a face lift. As cliched as it may sound, when space is tight, you think out of the box and that’s exactly what the architects did. Literally and figuratively! They renovated the existing structure without compromising the open spaces to give it a new look with bold colours, shiny floors, exposed concrete walls for that element of rusticity, cozy corners, verandas to hang out, and clever creation…
