This post features a Bangalore apartment decorated using mirror art work called Thikri. Years ago, I had this beautiful yellow dress adorned with mirror work that my mom bought in Bangalore enroute our home town. Mirror art work on dresses was common place then. You know how it is — when ends meet means, when things one owned were far and few and only 2-3 occasions in a year were worthy of getting a new dress, each one was special and you remembered them for a lifetime. Now, umm. I wonder if we would remember what we bought last year for Diwali. This living room is a head turner and the reason for that trip down memory lane. When I learned that it was mirror work…
Chettinad architecture insipred apartment with wooden pillars This Chettinad inspired house was all about going back to roots, for its owners Sai and Anusha. The 2,500 sq.ft style Chettinad architecture style apartment in Bangalore has been designed by Jyothika Baleri of Destination Designs. This post is going to be a little different because instead of me Jyothika will narrate the journey of how this house came about to be a home for Sai and Anusha. Over to Joe… I very strongly believe if you go back to your roots, if you mine that inner territory, you can bring out something that is incredibly you and authentic – like your thumbprint. It’s going to have your style because there is no one like you. -Joyce Tenneson…
I’m not a trained interior designer. Wondering why this disclosure? Because I learnt the nuances while designing our house, as I’m sure many of us have. How? Didn’t we have a designer? It makes for an interesting story that I will tell in another post. Every room took days, but the ones that took up maximum time were kitchen, pooja and the foyer bench. In this post, I’m going to answer all the queries about designing an Indian kitchen using the ones designed by Livspace to illustrate each point. My son and I cracked the kitchen design one evening after several spatial permutations of the triangle – sink, hob and fridge. I credit the final design to him. He was just 7…
I have been a long time admirer of the clean, minimal look. And, I can only blame this fondness for a pared-down house on two things: one, it takes less time, effort, and money to maintain a minimal home, and two, there is no constant compulsion or confusion over what to buy to keep up with the trends and neighbors. In short, I have discovered over the years, that a minimal home is the secret to our stress-free lives, and the most preferred place to just be. In recent months, fewer knick-knacks has also helped me in combating dust mites and other allergy related issues of my son more effectively. If you have been a long time admirer of this look, but not sure how to…
A collection of pooja rooms for small spaces and homes from one of the best traditional interior designers in Bangalore who specializes in ethnic designs.
Today, we are touring Deepa Ghankot’s cafe-themed home in Bangalore. This home has been designed in a semi-industrial and eclectic style, with predominant touches of natural and raw elements. We wanted a space that was authentic and minimalist, yet young and urban. Thus, we gravitated towards using natural elements like brick, wood, chalkboard walls, upcycled décor items etc. False ceilings, extensive use of plywood work (the only place where we have plywood is the kitchen, all other furniture including wardrobes are in either solid wood or iron), use of bulky furniture etc. find no place in the home. Considering that we are in our early thirties, we wanted to add elements of pop and quirkiness, which find reflection in the industrial décor and pop furniture…
Planning to buying a old home and renovate it on a budget? Then this is for you. You will discover which interior designer to connect with, and garden, flooring and furnishing ideas. There’s something about taking a peek inside real homes. There’s a bit of suspense of what lies behind those doors, of how people dress their homes, and the excitement builds if the doorway is tastefully decorated. What I have for you today is the renovation of a 20-year old home in Vidyaranyapura, Bangalore by Jyothika Baleri of Destination Designs. Renovated homes are tricky and it takes trained eyes to see beyond what is obvious and unlock the potential. What to consider when renovating a home Typical questions that would arise in one’s mind…
A duplex apartment in Bangalore designed by interior designer Shivani Dogra. This home is rich in fabrics and artifacts sourced from the local market. Most of the projects I have featured recently require a great deal of wood work, sourcing materials across locations, and needles to say, a huge budget. From my experience of doing up our new home, I can safely say any ethnic touch costs a bomb: be it sourcing a wooden pillar or carved wood furniture. Shivani’s projects have always appealed to me because they are not high on budget, and the focus is on styling to make a room come alive. Her clever use of bed spreads, coordinated curtains and blinds gives a seamless look to a room. I take you…
An interior designer who specilaizes in home renovations in Bangalore illustrated this home tour.
A chess feature on a wall? In a tete-a-tete with Aanchal and Yogesh of Inner Space.. 1. Please tell us about Inner Space and your story before we begin discussing the project. “Necessity is the mother of all inventions” and birth of Inner Space happened because of this very reason. In 2007, I started looking to consult Interior designers/company to do my 3 BHK house. During my search I came across many designers – some whose work I liked a lot, were not so receptive to my needs and requirements and some who would listen were not able to give me what I wanted. This led me to a decision that I will do my house myself. From working as a “technical marketing manager” to…
