One fundraiser with my pals, you’ll never need another cent. – Bruce Wayne to Harvey in The Dark Knight “One tour of your home is all Fabindia needs to sell their stuff.” I joked to Ishita calling her Fabindia’s unofficial brand ambassador. Let’s take a tour of Ishita’s home that is a handbook in styling, entertaining, and decorating on a small budget. About the home Who lives here: Ishita Sudha Yashvi, her sister Umang Vanshika, mum, grand mum, and three female dogs – Biskit, Julie and Hazel. Yes, it’s an all feminine household, with a continuous influx of people all…

Sometimes, an envious zipcode for an apartment in Mumbai comes with what’s a given: lack of natural light, matchbox sized rooms, and lower ceilings. But, as Zenab Lokhandwala of ZED Designs shows there’s nothing a clever renovation can’t redeem. She gave this 1,230 sq.ft apartment in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai a new lease of life. Home to the Bhatnagars, the family needed more storage space, a larger functional kitchen, a servant quarter, and of course, modern aesthetics. The apartment went under the hammer, literally, as Zenab ripped down the apartment for renovation to its bare structure. She then adeptly redesigned the…

Every architect has a signature. I’ve come to identify Amit Shastri of Amit Shastri Architects with geometry, play of light, neutral tones leaning towards gray, and liberal use of wood — all that take a contemporary form. So, when it was time to design an apartment for his family, he stayed true to his identity. The final rendition is this harmonious apartment designed intentionally with natural elements of wood and light. Step inside this clean home bathed in neutral tones with tons of clever storage ideas. About the home: Who lives here: Amit Shastri and his family.Location: Vile Parle – West,…

The porch at Vibhuti’s home. Decor Tip: The hanging bottle is a DIY, made out of mayonnaise bottles, rope and a tree stem. Paint the windows for a colorful touch. One common question I receive every year between March and May is for ideas on how to spruce up the government bungalows. This is the time of the year when many families move to a different location. So, who better than Vibhuti Pandey, who lives in one such sprawling bungalow in Patna, take us through budget-friendly ideas to decorate your rental home. For the better part of my childhood, we lived…

An inbuilt shoe rack in the concrete alcove at the entrance of the studio apartment. This home made me heady; made me want to do a few things: take a physical tour of the space, study architecture, rip down the walls of my own home, and instilled the fear of writing for what if the words didn’t do justice to its beauty. So, I have to sheepishly admit that I sat admiring the frames of this rustic modern one bedroom apartment in Ahmedabad of architect Malay Doshi, than give shape to words. There are few homes that have this kind…

I have a fascination for geometry. As a pre-teen, I would spend hours on those rainy afternoons, drawing repetitive patterns of triangles, squares and intersecting lines. The clever usage of parallel lines in this 2 BHK apartment designed by Komal Sachdev took me back to those self-indulgent afternoons 30 years ago. Grey, black, and oak as dark & moody colors rule the palette of this home. It’s not a overly minimalist, contemporary home. It makes brilliant use of a modest square footage to accommodate and make room for storage in two bedrooms. About the project: Location: Navi Mumbai Size: 1350…

Home to a family of three generations, an elegant silver gray rules the colour palette of this Ahmedabad bungalow designed by Urban Sense Architects. There are other striking aspects, too, such as brass inlays, larger-than-life art, and the master bed room designed on a deck of cards. Yes, it has art so big that your eyes will be fixated on it for a while trying to absorb what it is before letting your gaze wander again. Don’t believe me? Then, you’ve got to scroll down to see yourself. About the project: Who lives here: Mr. Dhaval Patel & his family,…

Brick walls are not uncommon; they come in many avatars from red to white, and wallpaper to natural. But, to have an entire apartment clad in red brick walls couple with exposed RCC for ceiling and natural stone flooring? That’s the real deal – a whole package for making others envious of your gorgeous home. This 2,290 sq.ft apartment in Ahmedabad designed by The Grid Architects fits the bill for owner’s pride, neighbor’s envy perfectly. It ticks the boxes for an industrial style apartment just as much as an old townhouse. About the project: Location: Ahmedabad Size: 2,290 sq.ft Type:…

When Meghna Venkatesh shared 2-3 pictures of her living room, I wanted to see the rest of her 2,200 sq.ft home in the Bay Area. Every inch of the living space is decked tastefully with wooden artifacts and chests, brass lamps, Tanjore paintings, and handwoven dhurries that reminded me of some treasured finds at Cauvery Emporium or Cottage Industries from the late ’90s. Meghna went on to confide that the living and staircase are decorated in the Indian ethnic theme while the rest of the home is predominantly modern functional. And, for a change, this home tour is narrated in…
