When you do quality work, execute professionally and deliver on time, there will be no dearth of work.  This is particularly true for interior designers and architects. And commendable work, seldom escapes unnoticed.  This is true in the case of H+J Studio who have executed seven projects in Ratnaakar Beaumonde, an ultra-luxury apartment in Ahmedabad. This apartment is their eighth project.  But, it also presents a strange conundrum.  When you design interiors for many apartments in the same community,  there is an invisible pressure to push the envelope and create a unique design. Often, with no drastic changes in layouts…

This is part of a series of posts that takes you through the whole process of getting interiors done for your home – whether it is new or renovation. In this post, two interior designers tell you how much to budget/allocate for interiors of your home. “What is your budget?” “What is your budget?” “What is your budget?” We had no frigging clue. And you know how frustrating it is to keep hearing a question when you are not clued in. This is one question that all interior designers ask you and sometimes even begin with when you approach them…

I was magnetically drawn to the turquoise and fuchsia colours in the apartment. This pre-owned apartment that is now home to a small family gets a bright, cheery and refreshing update from Da Namah Design Studio, a Mumbai based interior design firm. There is one strikingly different aspect about this project: colorful furnishings and prints that amazingly perks up one’s mood and a rush of positive energy. Ever so often, you see homes photographed  in neutral shades of white and grey. But, by draping the bed in liberal amounts of neon colours, the house screams Indian and I’m sure you’ll…

“Your home should tell the story of what you are and be a collection of what you have”. This 1-BHK apartment in Surat is a living example of this. The compact, functional and no-frills home with subtle hints of the Tamizh culture has been designed by Grishma Desai of Align Design Studio for Mr. Rammnaath’s parents. He wanted his elderly parents, in their mid-70s now, to be closer to him and this house is a result of that. About the project Who lives here: a retired elderly Tamil couple in their mid-70s who relocated from Chennai Location: Bhatar , Surat ,…

If you are used to the minimalist vibe of most homes featured here,  then this one is going to make your head dizzy.  But, be forewarned, that if you are a true maximalist, you are going to love it for its vibrant colors, saturated patterns, look-at-me tiles, textured walls, floral prints, and make-you-blush bathroom. Designed by Studio s w a + p for a family with two young kids, the 2,500 sq.ft apartment has everything the heart desires — from an incredible sea view to lush greenery and a…

Most Mumbai apartments come in two variations: ones with modest square footage or sprawling ones with a spectacular view. This apartment of 1050 sq. ft housing a family of four falls under the first category. Designers have to be at their creative best to make a small space work in order to accommodate storage needs and make it visually appealing. It was a blessing in disguise for this family as the designers – Bhumika and Chintan of Limited Edition Design Studio – were immediate family. Many things with respect to choices and lifestyle go unsaid when you are family. Aptly…

Stone-crete plastered surfaces. Brick cladding. Cement flooring. Solid wood. Open spaces. No tiles. This penthouse belongs to Amit Sanghvi, an industrialist, who returned after spending several years in the US. He wanted his home to mimic the rawness and openness of the exposed industrial design that he took a liking to from his years of living in New York. Harsh Boghani of The Crossboundaries gave shape to Amit’s vision by transforming this concrete shell (literally) into a beautiful industrial apartment dressed in natural materials. Personally, for me, it was amazing to see this less-traveled path of appreciating raw concrete. The design…
