This 3 BHK apartment in Ahmedabad designed by UA LAB goes by the name “Aqua Rapport”. Rightfully so. But, when I scrolled through the project pictures, the first word that came to my mind to describe the interior design of this apartment was “fluid”. This 2,700 sq.ft. apartment in Gandhinagar designed by Vidhi Patel is a brilliant showcase for a Google query on “Interior color schemes” or “How to choose paint colors for your home interior”. Vidhi has worked with the the three basic colors on the color wheel using both contrasting and complementing schemes in endearing geometric patterns for the interiors of this home that has me riveted. This apartment is a celebration of three basic colors – red, blue and yellow inspired by the painting of Piet Mondrian in living room, dining, and entrance. My favorite corners in the home would be the crockery cabinet, the wooden partition in the living room that doubles up as a showcase for artifacts, the lotus engraving in the pooja room,…

This 3 bedroom Mumbai apartment has been renovated by architect Sahiba Madan of Insitu / Kalakaari Haath for a young working couple (the designer herself and her husband). Originally bought as additional space for the couple’s parents who lived on a lower floor, the apartment has remained untouched for over 7 years. The house is infused with layers of functional furniture, rich textiles, handcrafted rafters, thoughtfully placed plants, artwork, and locally sourced treasures. “It’s like a balance between the oldest t-shirt you’ve been sleeping in since school and the new outfit you bought and aspire to be seen in. ” says Sahiba. This sentence captures the essence of striking that balance in function and aesthetics when renovating an old Mumbai home with limited square footage. About…

All those beautiful homes featured in the glossies, and many times on the blog here, are wonderful to ogle at. But, are they affordable and practical to maintain without an army of house help? Hell, no. They are for visual pleasure just like window shopping is good for the soul. Which is why my heart goes out to this 3 BHK apartment in Dahod designed by DA Architects for a business family with aspirations of a brighter future. Sometimes, an envious zipcode for an apartment in Mumbai comes with what’s a given: lack of natural light, matchbox sized rooms, and lower ceilings. But, as Zenab Lokhandwala of ZED Designs shows there’s nothing a clever renovation can’t redeem. She gave this 1,230 sq.ft apartment in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai a new lease of life. Home to the Bhatnagars, the family needed more storage space, a larger functional kitchen, a servant quarter, and of course, modern aesthetics. The apartment went under the hammer, literally, as Zenab ripped down the apartment for renovation to its bare structure. She then adeptly redesigned the layout making room for customized built-in furniture and utilized every nook to accommodate concealed storage. The biggest challenge, of course, was to deliver it in…

Every architect has a signature. I’ve come to identify Amit Shastri of Amit Shastri Architects with geometry, play of light, neutral tones leaning towards gray, and liberal use of wood — all that take a contemporary form. So, when it was time to design an apartment for his family, he stayed true to his identity. The final rendition is this harmonious apartment designed intentionally with natural elements of wood and light. Step inside this clean home bathed in neutral tones with tons of clever storage ideas. Brick wall in an apartment designed by The Grid Architects This 2,290 sq.ft apartment in Ahmedabad designed by The Grid Architects fits the bill for owner’s pride, neighbor’s envy perfectly. It ticks the boxes for an industrial style apartment just as much as an old townhouse. Brick walls are not uncommon; they come in many avatars from red to white, and wallpaper to natural. But, to have an entire apartment clad in red brick walls couple with exposed RCC for ceiling and natural stone flooring? That’s the real deal – a whole package for making others envious of your gorgeous home.
