A compact view of the living + dining + kitchen in a single frame. This is a home tour of Mumbai-based architect & interior designer Mahek Lalan’s (of SML Architects) 2-bedroom family home. It’s not often you get to see how the architects’ design a home for themselves paring down the frills and superfluous artifacts. This home is particularly breathtaking as it gave me a beach-home vibe when I first looked at it for its offbeat usage of birch ply. Indian interiors are characteristic of dark wood stains being dominated by rose wood and teak wood for years. The freshness of the light-colored birch ply is refreshing as it opens up a compact home allowing the rooms to flow from one to another seamlessly. The…

A three-seater arm chair and two single armchairs by Pierre Jeanneret made out of old Burma reclaimed teak wood take the center stage in the living room. The natural materials give a sense of calm and reminsicence of yester years. SML Architects has designed this 720 sq.ft two-bedroom apartment in Mumbai for a family of three. There a number of striking things about the home that keeps you riveted: the distinctive grey ceiling to begin with, the cane chairs, subtle use of powder pink in all the rooms, the monochromatic paintings, and finally the restraint with which this project has been executed. Simplicity is often misunderstood for minimalism. But, I personally find it the most difficult thing to achieve — to know when to step…

Traditional south Indian touches are quite evident in this modern Mumbai apartment by Design Consortium Harshit & Mansi of Design Consortium designed this residential luxury apartment in Lodha Fiorenza, Mumbai for a corporate honcho and his family. All it takes to connect the dots to the family’s southern roots are the towering brass annapakshi vilakkus (lamps) on either side of the sofa in the living room. And it’s hard not to notice the signature vermilion and mustard cushions with traditional motifs in an otherwise modern design setting. Also peppered on the walls are large artworks `~ primarily Tanjore, Worli and Madhubani paintings. The decor is a balance of beautiful pieces of art the family has collected over the years blending into modern interiors. Who lives…
