This 2,700 sq.ft. apartment in Gandhinagar designed by Vidhi Patel is a brilliant showcase for a Google query on “Interior color schemes” or “How to choose paint colors for your home interior”. Vidhi has worked with the the three basic colors on the color wheel using both contrasting and complementing schemes in endearing geometric patterns for the interiors of this home that has me riveted. This apartment is a celebration of three basic colors – red, blue and yellow inspired by the painting of Piet Mondrian in living room, dining, and entrance. My favorite corners in the home would be the crockery cabinet, the wooden partition in the living room that doubles up as a showcase for artifacts, the lotus engraving in the pooja room,…
Kalpak Shah of Pune-based Studio Course has designed this minimalist bungalow with a timeless appeal. The choice of natural materials like teak wood, black granite, kota flooring, and wicker in modern forms gives the home a rugged yet sophisticated look. Clean lines for the furniture, unusual skirting length, walls and surfaces devoid of unnecessary artefacts lets the space take the center stage. If the intent of design was to achieve a calm and serene space, the architect has nailed the brief. It’s a modern take on mid-century design for a home whose interiors are beautifully wrapped by the exteriors. It’s been over two years since I split a post into two parts because covering it in one wouldn’t do justice. Tulsi Shyam, designed by Ace Associates in Nadiad for a small family of 4 in one such jaw-dropping house. No adjective was appropriate to describe its WOW factor that beautifully blends privacy, aesthetics, stealth, and vastu. Whenever a house is built to conform to vastu principles, it either loses it aesthetics or functionality for the awkward positioning of how the individual spaces flow into one another. In this house, neither happens and they all flow naturally. I expect you to go back and forth this post and the next a few times to admire, be in awe and envy it all. About the project:…
The past few months has made the hearts of wanderlusts crave for travel — more than ever. Even for those us who have never been to Greece, Italy, Cyprus or any of the Mediterranean islands, the images of this 2-bedroom holiday penthouse in Pune designed by Between Walls will make an effortless connection. One where the blue doors and windows stand out against the pristine white walls with azure sky and turquoise waters as the backdrop in the all-too-familiar islands of Mykonos, Santorini or Cyclades. To be inspired by certain elements of an architecture is one thing but to pull it off in entirety, if not for the disclosure that this apartment is amidst a tropical concrete jungle, requires ingenuity. In short, a weekend spent…
This 3 bedroom Mumbai apartment has been renovated by architect Sahiba Madan of Insitu / Kalakaari Haath for a young working couple (the designer herself and her husband). Originally bought as additional space for the couple’s parents who lived on a lower floor, the apartment has remained untouched for over 7 years. The house is infused with layers of functional furniture, rich textiles, handcrafted rafters, thoughtfully placed plants, artwork, and locally sourced treasures. “It’s like a balance between the oldest t-shirt you’ve been sleeping in since school and the new outfit you bought and aspire to be seen in. ” says Sahiba. This sentence captures the essence of striking that balance in function and aesthetics when renovating an old Mumbai home with limited square footage. About…

This plush home in Worli with a famous address has been designed by We Design Studio for a family of four. That it cannot be boxed into a certain style is what best describes this deceptively simple home. The flawlessly designed home will floor you for getting all the aspects that define a warm home: wooden charm, ample storage, flooding the dark corners with natural light, well lit, soothing furnishings, and most importantly comfort. But, the sheer brilliance of this home is its not over-the-top design. The house is timeless; it doesn’t play second fiddle to trending colors, wallpapers, and lights. It’s one where you can home to and feel at home. Defined by neutral colors, wooden furniture, and pastel furnishings, this home is like…
The Jain family had a grandiose architectural vision for their farmhouse, a getaway/second home, in Raipur. Ajay Patil of Prime Facie visualized their dreams and gave shape to this contemporary mansion inspired by Balinese-design. The property, part of a gated Gold course in Bhilai along the banks of river Shivnath, is a symphony in wood and natural stone. The offbeat location of the property to procure materials did not deter the client or the architect to make the drawings into a reality. Jute on the ceilings, sandstone clad walls with fabulous wooden furniture helped create that effect. The architect brilliantly used the external spaces and elements of light and wind to flow inward, giving the space a sense of the nature. There are several showstopper…
Aum Architects brilliantly navigated the challenge of an awkward living room floor plan and other curveballs that come with a renovation to do up this two bedroom apartment for a family that has its cultural roots in Rajasthan. The family relocated to Mumbai a few years ago, but the design influences of marble and wood are quite apparent and in a way reminiscent of their heritage. Mumbai apartments come with a modest real estate footprint. It’s becoming increasingly common to see two adjacent apartments being combined into one when the spatial needs of a family are high by Mumbai standards. Having said that, it takes architectural vision and expertise to make the most of the space — both for function and aesthetics — if the…
