How to design a 800 sq.ft apartment
Space is a luxury not many are privy to in Mumbai. This 3,600 sq.ft penthouse in Mumbai, fortunate to have enough square footage, has been designed by Studio Lagom to capitalize on natural light and space. The result is an enchanting home spread over two levels with a slice of nature inside, hidden doors camouflaging mammoth storage from plain sight, and a distinctive staircase whose walls are peppered with hand-drawn Gond paintings. The home has been aptly dubbed “the house of hidden doors” by the architects. Mediterranean design is anything but straight lines; it is defined by arches, textured white-washed walls with a good dose of blue for windows and doors, and all colours that stem from nature. The 2,660 sq.ft apartment is a modern interpretation of this much-loved design style as one often associates Greece or Spain to vacation. And when you have a home that exudes this relaxing, holiday vibe, you stop yearning for a vacation outside. This post features a Bangalore apartment decorated using mirror art work called Thikri. Years ago, I had this beautiful yellow dress adorned with mirror work that my mom bought in Bangalore enroute our home town. Mirror art work on dresses was common place then. You know how it is — when ends meet means, when things one owned were far and few and only 2-3 occasions in a year were worthy of getting a new dress, each one was special and you remembered them for a lifetime. Now, umm. I wonder if we would remember what we bought last year for Diwali. This living room is a head turner and the reason for that trip down memory lane. When I learned that it was mirror work adorning the walls, nostalgia hit me and I was reminded of that dress from years ago. Embellishments in palaces is heard of , but in…
Look at the picture of the entrance above and take a guess what the railing reminds you of. The answer is hidden somewhere in the rest of the post. The interior designer for this project named this house: “Evocative Domesticity”. Does it sound intriguing? Well, it did for me. But, then, trust The Company of Design, the folks who designed this apartment to give every project they design — an identity of its own, symbolic of its occupants and the design. In simple words, evocative domesticity means ” memories of home or family life.” As you scroll through the images of this 1,890 sq.ft apartment in Surat, you simply wonder, how these two words succinctly described the essence of the home. About the home: Type: 1,890 sq.ft. apartment for a family of six spanning three generations. Location: Surat, Gujarat Design Aesthetic: Industrial/Mid-Century Modern Designers: Pooja Shah, Niel Parekh of The…
What makes a home tour endearing to watch for you? The deciding factor for me is often one picture, I would have got a fleeting glance of, on some medium. And, more often than not, I will delightfully discover this picture was just the tip of the iceberg as more goodness lies buried underneath in layers all over the house. It’s the little details that sets apart a thoughtfully conceived one from one put together hastily. You will pleasantly unearth many such details in this renovated apartment designed by Studio M Design. About the home: Type: 3 BHK apartment for a family of six. Location: Surat, Gujarat Construction: Renovated Design Aesthetic: Scandinavian Designer: Studio-M Design led by Moiz Faizulla Imagine being greeted to a home with its front door painted Indigo. Bold and beautiful? You bet. And now, imagine the bright color continuing into the foyer. This home pulls off…
This Chettinad inspired house was all about going back to roots, for its owners Sai and Anusha. The 2,500 sq.ft style Chettinad architecture style apartment in Bangalore has been designed by Jyothika Baleri of Destination Designs. This post is going to be a little different because instead of me Jyothika will narrate the journey of how this house came about to be a home for Sai and Anusha. Over to Joe… I very strongly believe if you go back to your roots, if you mine that inner territory, you can bring out something that is incredibly you and authentic – like your thumbprint. It’s going to have your style because there is no one like you. -Joyce Tenneson One Sunday afternoon, I got a call to accommodate a meeting on that day. It’s only for half an hour they said and requested we meet immediately! I obliged. This is how…
Many of you e-mail me requesting quotation for your interior projects. I do not design or execute interiors. The conversation then takes a natural turn asking if I could recommend someone in your city. I choose to feature only those designers or projects here that align with my design aesthetics. I must also point out that I have not done the due diligence of the ease of working with these designers. Interior design is a tricky, human-centric business. Pictures are one thing (the destination), but the journey will always be a mystery until you have experienced it yourself. One, where more often than not, deadlines are missed, tempers flare, and there is enough room for miscommunication and inflexibility. So, you should be incredibly lucky to have an understanding designer that delivers on time, and within budget. All the contact details of the designers featured here are usually given so you…
Let us take a break from our minimal, modern interiors for some visual indulgence in this apartment in Vadodara. Designed by Studio 7 designs, it would be unfair to categorize the aesthetic of this sprawling apartment as traditional or contemporary; for, it checks all the boxes and does it effortlessly. About the project: Location: Oakwood Residences, Vadodara Type: A 4 BHK apartment converted into 3 bedrooms and 1 study If the gilded and brown tones impart the traditional character, the furniture reinforce it. But, the contemporary artwork gives the living room a stamp of modernity. The architect says about the brief for the project, “The client wanted an apartment that was contemporary, but exuded luxury, and that feel of richness. We are talking about a well-traveled client who was totally clued in about the global trends.” The apartment consists of four bedrooms in which one was converted into a…
